Michael Clarke set to lose massive $150k commentary stint for India series following the most public row with girlfriend Jade

As a result of the ongoing fallout from his public altercation with girlfriend Jade Yarbrough, former Test captain Michael Clarke is expected to be replaced as a commentator for Australia’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India.

The Age reports that Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking for additional former players who will join Matthew Hayden in the commentary panel for the four-match series beginning on February 9 in Nagpur.

The BCCI hires commentators directly for commentating in home series, and sells the rights to the broadcast feed around the world. Foxtel holds the rights for the forthcoming series. The Foxtel network have the rights for the upcoming BGT.

Michael Clarke likely to be dropped from BGT 2023 commentator team

However, with the ongoing Clarke-Jade episode, the BCCI might replace Clarke from commentary role which is worth $150k. With only a handful of days left for the series, the board might rope in alternative commentators to cover the entire tour or just the Test or limited overs segment.

Mark Waugh is expected to be the front runner to replace Clarke as a commentator as the other top Australian commentators are unlikely to commentate. The main reason is that they are involved with multiple IPL franchises in various positions and a commentary stint might further extend their time here with IPL starting right after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Clarke shares his views

When he returned to breakfast radio on Monday, Clarke did not mention the India commentary post, but he did remark that he had been given a job commentating on the Pakistan Super League Twenty20 event, which takes place from February 13 to March 19.

“I’ve just been asked to commentate on the PSL, the Pakistan Premier League, and you should see the internationals they’ve got,”

“So many overseas players are going and playing in that tournament.”

The Clarke and Jade episode

The altercation between Clarke and his girlfriend Jade Yarbrough in Noosa, which came to light last week, was followed by an instant and sincere apology from the former Australian World Cup winning captain, as the “poor look” threatened many corporate and commentary opportunities. The cricketer was seen being slapped.

When a bystander’s video of Nine’s Today programme anchor Karl Stefanovic attempting to diffuse the argument went viral, police authorities were forced to punish the couple for causing a public nuisance. Clarke while in an interview stated:

“I’m absolutely gutted I’ve put people I hold in the highest regard in this position. My actions in the lead-up to this altercation were nothing short of shameful and regrettable,”
