Men’s T20 World Cup: Uganda qualify for first time, will play in 2024 edition in West Indies and USA
Uganda’s cricket team achieved a historic milestone by securing qualification for the T20 World Cup 2024, slated to be held in the West Indies and the United States of America. The team celebrated their remarkable achievement with a spirited nine-wicket victory over Rwanda, sealing their spot in the prestigious competition. The victory against Rwanda in the Africa Qualifier’s regional final marked Uganda’s fifth win in six matches, ensuring a top-two finish. The team’s exceptional performance in the qualifiers secured their place alongside Namibia as the second African team to participate in the T20 World Cup 2024.
During the match, Rwanda, batting first, was bowled out for 65 runs in 18.5 overs. In response, Uganda effortlessly chased the target in 8.1 overs, losing only one wicket in the process.
Uganda’s qualification makes them the fifth African nation to compete in the T20 World Cup. However, the regional favorite, Zimbabwe, faced disappointment as they failed to secure a berth, currently holding the third position in the regional final with six points from three wins in five games.
With the conclusion of the Africa Qualifier, the lineup for the 20 participating teams in the main tournament has been finalized. Scheduled to take place from June 4-30 next year, the T20 World Cup will see the top two teams from each group advancing to the Super 8 stage, followed by the semi-finals and the final.
