Berrettini expressed his sadness at having to withdraw from the tournament, stating that he was finally finding his level and getting back to where he wanted to be. He stated that the decision was a difficult one, but necessary due to the severity of his injury.

According to Berrettini, he felt some pain in his obliques during his match the day before. The pain became significantly worse overnight, and after consulting with his medical team, he underwent an MRI scan that revealed a grade 2 tear in his internal oblique muscle.

Tough Start to 2023

Berrettini has had a tough start to the year 2023, having been disrupted by a series of niggling injuries towards the end of last year. He was knocked out of the Australian Open in the first round by Andy Murray and retired in the quarter-finals of his next tournament in Mexico. He was also eliminated in his opening matches at both Indian Wells and Miami.

As a result of Berrettini’s withdrawal, Holger Rune advances to the quarter-finals and awaits the winner of the match between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev.

Injury Woes

Berrettini’s withdrawal from the Monte Carlo Masters highlights the continuing issue of injury woes that have plagued many tennis players over the years. The intensity of the sport puts immense pressure on players, which can lead to injuries that take a long time to heal.

While Berrettini’s injury is a setback, he will be hoping to recover in time for future tournaments. The Italian has shown that he has the talent to compete at the highest level of the sport, and fans will be eagerly awaiting his return to action.
