Marcos Alonso: FC Barcelona defender undergoes successful surgery, set to return in Mid-March

FC Barcelona might have received one of their best recuperation news when veteran defender Marcos Alonso is reported to have undergone a successful surgery on his lower back. He is currently slated to be on the sidelines for two months, as he will begin his recovery period within few days.

Marcos Alonso- a seasoned left-back

Marcos Alonso -the former Chelsea left-back, who has etched his name among the history books by becoming one of the potent players in that position, has been one of the regulars for the Spanish defending champions FC Barcelona this season. One of the starters for Xavi’s side who had gradually fallen down the pecking order due to the rise of La Masia stalwart Alejandro Balde, Alonso had been looked upon as a mentor for youngsters who play in that position. But, whenever handed the opportunity to be in the starting eleven, Alonso has stirred his boss Xavi and critics likewise, with indications at him being released at the end of this season when his contract expires.

But, he was sidelined since last few weeks, and has not featured for the Catalans in last five games. With a recurring back problem which had previously dogged him in his improvement, Alonso decided to go under the knife, thus opting out of the squad. Yesterday, as reported by Javi Miguel of AS, the left-back has completed a successful operation of the lower back, under the command of renowned specialist Amelie Leglise at Bordeaux- who had previously operated Marc Andre Ter Stegen.

Defender to miss chunk of games

It has been reported that Alonso will be returning to Barcelona today, as he is slated to begin his recovery period as soon as possible. He is scheduled to be back on the field somewhere in mid-March, as he will be expected to miss most games during this period, as Barcelona enters a tricky phase of the season.

According to Barcelona’s uphill schedule which includes several exceptional games within this two-month stint, Alonso would be missing as many as 12 games on the trot, which included nine La Liga fixtures, one Copa Del Rey game, one Super Cup game, and a vital clash of UEFA Champions League against Napoli.

He could miss more games provided Barcelona progresses to the next stage of Copa Del Rey and reaches the finals of Spanish Super Cup. The 33-year old would look to fasten his return on the pitch, as he would look to bolster the defensive set-up for the Catalan giants, who would look for a reinforced start this year, after bringing Brazilian sensation Vitor Roque on deck.
