Manchester United vs Newcastle United: Carabao Cup match preview, team news, head-to-head, line-ups, venue, date, time, where to watch

Manchester United and Newcastle United are set to lock horns in Old Trafford in a rematch of the final of last season on their Carabao Cup defense, as both sides look to mend their weekend blues after playing out unsatisfactory results in the Premier League. United lost to crosstown nemesis Manchester City 0-3, courtesy a Haaland brace and Foden strike, with the Magpies settling for an unfortunate 2-2 stalemate against Wolves at Molineux stadium after being pegged back on the 71st minute by Hwang Hee-chan.

A battle of respect and faith

Manchester United- the legendary reigning champions of the Carabao Cup, one of the most decorated teams ever to grace the English football respect, seems to be faltering this season with 15 points from 10 games, winning five and losing the same. Under the strict vigil of former Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag, the might Red Devils seem to have gone from heroes to zeros this season, as their unsolicited and recessive season continues. Last night, they were hit with one of the worst humiliations of this season, being humbled 0-3 by crosstown rivals Manchester City, as several former superstars have begun to question Ten Hag’s reign, citing faltering results.

But, in the Carabao Cup, where they were crowned champions last season, and it holds a different story this season. In their last game against Crystal Palace, they were instrumental in defeating the Eagles by 3-0, owing to goals from Garnacho, Casemiro and Martial. Thus, they would be looking to continue their streak of winning games in the Cup.

The Magpies have been excellent since last season. After leading the side to a deserved UEFA Champions League spot after a hiatus of 20 years, Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe would be aiming another upset at the tournament, after hammering PSG 4-1 on their UCL return at St. James Park. They are well on course for another European campaign and have impressed this season owing to the likes of Isak, Almiron and Tonali boasting their ranks. They are coming on the back of a glorious outing in their last Carabao Cup encounter, ousting Manchester City out of the competition. Thus, they would look for another fumble, this time at the other side of Manchester, as Eddie Howe would look to enchant Toons with his magic.

Manchester United vs Newcastle United: team news

With reputation and a place in the round of 16 beckoning for either side, both tacticians would look to bolster their squad by starting a strong line-up. Although former Real Madrid star Casemiro did not take the field against City, he would be expected to make the squad along with Wan-Bissaka. Jadon Sancho would be absent from the team due to unresolved inflictions with the boss.

As for Newcastle, the Magpies had began their life without star player Sandro Tonali after his ban became effective for betting breaches, and is expected to come back on field later in August 2024.
