Manchester United vs Bayern Munich: Champions League Match Preview, Team News, Lineups and Prediction

Manchester United host already qualified Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in their final Group A clash on Tuesday.

Both sides suffered heavy defeats over the weekend. Man United were beaten 3-0 at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League, whereas Bayern were humiliated in a 5-1 defeat away to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.

Match Preview

Manchester United sit at the bottom of Group A, with just 4 points in five matches. Erik ten Hag’s men need a victory against Bayern at home to qualify for the next round.

Despite leading early in games against Copenhagen and Galatasaray, United have thrown away big leads that have cost them in this competition.

Moreover, even if they beat the Bavarians at Old Trafford, they would need Copenhagen and Galatasaray to draw their match as they both are on five points.

Manchester United did beat Chelsea 2-1 in the midweek clash, but a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at the weekend pretty much sums up their season.

As for Bayern Munich, they have suffered their first defeat in the Bundesliga. A 5-1 humiliating defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.

However, in the Champions League, the Bavarians have already secured the top spot in Group A, with four wins and one draw, which came against Copenhagen on matchday 5.

Despite earning 13 points in their five games, a visit to Old Trafford would only be to restore a much-needed sense of pride in Manchester. Bayern will aim to extend their unbeaten run in Champions League group-stage away games to 20 matches.

Both sides met on matchday one at the Allianz Arena, where the game ended 4-3 in September. The last time Manchester United were able to beat Bayern was back in 2010, a 3-2 win at Old Trafford.

Manchester United team news

Lisandro Martinez (foot), Casemiro (thigh), Tyrell Malacia (knee), Christian Eriksen (knee) and Amad Diallo (knee) will be out for the Bayern clash.

Mason Mount and Victor Lindelof may return ahead of the visit of Bayern, while Jadon Sancho’s ostracisation will not be ending any time soon.

Marcus Rashford, who has been benched in the last few games, will be available after ending his European ban.

Bayern Munich team news

Ex-Arsenal player Serge Gnabry was injured in Bayern’s 5-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt and will not travel with the squad to Manchester.

Gnabry will be sidelined with Matthijs de Ligt (knee), Bouna Sarr (knee), Gabriel Marusic (knee) and Tarek Buchmann (hamstring). However, Jamal Musiala is expected to be back in the starting XI to replace Gnabry.

German veteran Thomas Muller can also get the notch, as the Bavarians have already secured first place in the group.

Manchester United vs Bayern Munich: Predicted line-ups

Manchester United (4-2-3-1): Onana; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Varane, Shaw; McTominay, Mainoo; Antony, Fernandes, Rashford; Hojlund

Bayern Munich (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Laimer, Upamecano, Kim, Guerreiro; Goretzka, Kimmich; Musiala, Muller, Sane; Kane

Prediction

Manchester United 1-2 Bayern Munich

Despite playing at the Old Trafford, Man United have not been there themselves this season, and a win against this Bayern side would be tough for Ten Hag’s men.
