Manchester United: Erik ten Hag on the brink of removing Wout Weghorst and McTominay

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has decided to remove two players from the first team squad after their horrible defeat to Newcastle United, where the Red Devils slumped to a 0-2 loss, with the hopes of having a top four finish fading away, gradually.

They went to the match with hopes of qualifying directly, but the Magpies had other plans as goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson inflicting a painful defeat on them.

Erik Ten Hag to axe Wout Weghorst and McTominay

The defeat at Tyneside came because of lack of intent in all three sectors. They looked woeful in the back, terrible in the midfield and lacked enthusiasm in the attacking front. It seemed United was having a shortcoming as they were having a hard time in playing out all the shots of Newcastle United.

They looked fragile and speculations has already started in the market about some of the fringe players exiting the squad ahead of the next season. Among the notable players who fared worst on the field were Scottish midfielder McTominay, who comes from a fruitful international break and Dutch Wout Weghorst.

Players under fire

McTominay has been in the squad and has been a clutch player for the Red Devils since Jose Mourinho handed him a debut few years back. But recently after ten Hag’s implementation, he seems to be going through a rough patch. He played in place of Casemiro, who was left out of squad owing to suspension.

Since he has been a misfit in ten Hag’s plan, Manchester needs to replace him with a world-class midfielder like Frenkie de Jong or Jude Bellingham, both of the options are meagre as they are committed with their respective teams, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund. So, Red Devils need to look after a superior replacement in upcoming summer transfer window.

Dutch striker seem to part ways

Wout Weghorst, the Dutch striker who almost snatched the dream of Argentina after scoring a brace in the dying moments of the 2022 World Cup quarter finals, had been in ten Hag’s mind as he was signed in the January transfer session, and was always a top class striker according to ten Hag as he used to defend his compatriot.

But, however, he seems to have fallen out of favor of the coach as his performance was rated shambolic against the Magpies, completing just four passes, while his side slipped to a defeat.

Legendary former English player Gary Neville was heard saying, “He does play his part. It’s a big issue.” He further added, “He doesn’t deserve to be criticized, I think he is doing his very best. He works as hard as he possibly can but he just lacks the quality that a player in that position should have at Manchester United.”
