Manchester United Ends Sergio Reguilon Loan Early, Sending Defender Back to Tottenham

In a surprising move, Manchester United has opted to terminate Sergio Reguilon’s season-long loan, triggering a break clause in the deal. The Spanish defender, who joined United in September as cover for Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, will now return to Tottenham. Reguilon’s departure was prompted by the return to fitness of Shaw and the imminent comeback of Malacia, coupled with the Red Devils’ exit from the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

Unexpected Termination of Loan Agreement

Despite completing 12 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions, totaling 655 minutes on the pitch, Reguilon’s loan agreement was cut short, a decision that reportedly was not entirely unexpected. The Red Devils initially targeted Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella but turned to Reguilon after complications arose with Cucurella’s appearance for Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

Shaw, who had been sidelined earlier in the season with a muscle injury, has returned to full fitness. Additionally, Malacia is nearing a return, providing more defensive options for United. With the club no longer competing in the Champions League and Carabao Cup, the opportunities for Reguilon to feature in upcoming matches were significantly reduced.

Potential for Reguilon’s January Move

As Reguilon has only played for Manchester United this season, FIFA rules allow him to join another club if he departs during the January transfer window. Talksport reports that Tottenham is considering either loaning out Reguilon again or exploring a potential sale in January.

Tottenham Hotspur, the parent club of Reguilon, will now assess their options with the Spanish full-back. Spurs could opt to loan him out again or consider a permanent transfer during the January transfer window. The 27-year-old defender’s future will likely depend on the negotiations between Tottenham and interested parties.

Manchester United is set to face Wigan in the FA Cup on Monday, where the absence of Reguilon will be noted following his early departure. The Red Devils will continue their campaign in domestic competitions as they aim for success in the FA Cup.
