Luton Town 0-1 Tottenham Hotspurs: Clinical Spurs go on top of Premier League as Van de Ven scores maiden goal

Ange Postecoglou’s men scored once again as Tottenham Hotspurs edge Luton Town by fine margins, after being reduced to 10 men, as Bissouma was sent off before the first half. Van de Ven was on target for the Spurs as the North London side claimed top spot of Premier League.

Tottenham continues winning streak

Tottenham Hotspurs has been on song this season since former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou was roped in as their manager. The North London side has been overwhelmingly performing since last few weeks, and have cemented their position at the top of the table. They had beaten Liverpool last weekend after a last-gasp own goal from Joel Matip saw them through, and would have looked to contain their winning streak at the domestic sector.

Owing to the likes of Maddison-Son duo which has seen Spurs vitalizing on victory this point, coupled with the strict vigil of former Celtic tactician Ange Postecoglou, it would be fair to say that Spurs are well on course to be one of the title contenders this season. Today, they had visited Kenilworth Stadium, the home of Luton Town, and had scored a flashy winner, with Van de Ven on target from a James Maddison assist, thus going to the top of the table for the first time since August 2022.

Spurs had started with their typical offensive mentality and had tested Luton in several occasions. The “Hatters” had delved a tough period in the starting as they saw a Tom Lockyear header thwarted off. Spurs even went down to ten men after Yves Bissouma was shown a red card before half-time, thus Luton deciphering Spurs with their utmost strength, but it was Maddison once again, who held his nerves to cut past Luton defenders from a side angle to gift the ball to Van de Ven, who was adept enough to slot the ball past the net, thus giving Ange’s side the anticipated lead.

Chances galore

Although the score line suggests a tough game for the Spurs, but they have had their fair share of chances, but had squandered their early opportunities to go ahead. Brazilian forward Richarlison had the chance to draw the first blood within first five minutes, but whipped the ball over the bar, after which another shot saw getting punched at Kaminski’s foot at the Luton goal. Pedro Porro decided to go for a shot but saw his shot going wide, as Bissouma confirmed his absence from next few games after diving at the Luton edge.

After going ahead on the 52nd minute, Ange played a masterstroke in vying for a more defensive approach by marshalling Emerson Royal and Skipp, as they replaced Maddison and Son combo. Furthermore, the North London side created less chances in the last minutes, before seeing off 18th placed Luton, who still remain winless in their home ground.

Edwards’ side, who had created a stir after qualifying for the Premier League, thus remain on 18th position, gathering 4 points from 8 games. Although they had scored a late goal against Burnley last time before eventually losing out, they could not take advantage of their opponents being a man-down, thus losing the crunch fixture, and remaining winless at Kenilworth Stadium.
