Litton Das ruled out of the Asia Cup; Anamul Haque Bijoy named replacement

The Bangladeshi batter has been suffering from viral fever since Sunday and was replaced by Anamul Haque Bijoy

Bangladesh has been dealt with a major blow before the start of their Asia Cup campaign as experienced batter Litton Das has been ruled out of the tournament after suffering from a viral fever since Sunday.

Anamul Haque Bijoy has been named as his replacement Minhajul Abedin the chief selector of Bangladesh confirmed the news. He said the team was looking for a wicketkeeper batter which is the reason behind picking Anamul as Litton’s replacement.

“He [Anamul] has been in the runs in domestic cricket and we have continued to monitor him in the Bangladesh Tigers programme. He was always in our consideration,” Minhajul was quoted as saying in the press release.

Litton’s absence has further weakened Bangladesh’s fragile batting lineup which only has two experienced batters in the top six Shakib and Mushfiqur. With Tamim Iqbal also not part of the squad for the Asia Cup the onus will now be on Shakib and Mushfiqur to carry the team’s batting on their shoulder.

The Journey

Talking about Anamul Haque the wicketkeeper batter has had a stop-start international career till now having made his debut in 2012 he failed to deliver on the big stage and went off the selector’s radar in 2016.

He returned to domestic cricket and started scoring runs but was ignored when his name came for the opening slot for the test series against South Africa. He continued his good run of form in domestic cricket but the then-captain Mashrafe Murtaza preferred Litton Das over Anamul in the build-up to the 2019 World Cup.

Anamul’s Performance

Anamul has featured in 44 ODIs and collected 1254 runs, including five fifties and three centuries at an average of 30.58. However, he made his last appearance in 2022, against team India during the third ODI match where he got out after scoring just eight runs off seven balls.
