Leicester City parts ways with Brendan Rodgers by mutual agreement

Leicester City, the Premier League football club, announced on March 2nd, 2023, that they have parted ways with Brendan Rodgers, their manager, by mutual agreement.

The team currently stands at 19th position in the league table, with 25 points from 28 games and facing a possible relegation. Their last game with Rodgers as the manager ended in a 2-1 loss against Crystal Palace.

Leicester City sack Brendon Rogers

Leicester City won the Premier League title in 2015-16, but now their nine-year run in the top-flight is at risk. Leicester chairman, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, stated that “performances and results during the current season have been below our shared expectations.

“It had been our belief that continuity and stability would be key to correcting our course. Regrettably, the desired improvement has not been forthcoming, and with 10 games of the season remaining, the Board is compelled to take alternative action to protect our Premier League status.”

Rodgers’ achievements as Leicester City’s manager

Rodgers, who joined Leicester in February 2019 after a successful stint with Scottish side Celtic, guided Leicester to their first-ever FA Cup triumph in 2021 when they beat Chelsea in the final.

Srivaddhanaprabha mentioned that “the achievements of the team under Brendan’s management speak for themselves. We’ve experienced some of our finest footballing moments under his guidance and will always be grateful to him and his staff for the heights they helped us to reach on the pitch.”

Leicester’s assistant manager Chris Davies has also left the club, and coaches Adam Sadler and Mike Stowell will take charge of training. Brendan Rodgers was the highest-paid manager in Leicester’s history, and his contract had two more seasons remaining.

Leicester City’s struggles under Rodgers’ leadership

Rodgers’ position as the first-team coach was unsalvageable after Crystal Palace came from behind to inflict defeat on Leicester. The Foxes missed out on the Champions League on both occasions, despite consecutive fifth-placed finishes in 2020 and 2021.

This season has been dire, except for a brief burst of form before the World Cup break. A significant section of supporters had long since turned on Rodgers, and the atmosphere at King Power Stadium would have been toxic if Leicester had not acted earlier.

Leicester City’s next steps to secure their Premier League status

Leicester’s chief decision-makers will be looking for alternative options to secure their Premier League status in their final 10 games of the season. They need to show the poise, quality, and fight to remain a Premier League club.
