Kylian Mbappe breaks Just Fontaine’s record in France’s victory over Greece

Kylian Mbappe breaks Just Fontaine’s record as they stretch their 100 per cent start in Euro 2024 qualifiers. Mbappe’s 55th-minute penalty was his 54th goal of this season.

That goal also broke the record of Just Fontaine, as Mbappe is now the top French scorer in a single club and International campaign.

In the 55th minute, Odysseas Vlachodimos first saved Mbappe’s penalty, only for Mateu Lahoz to spot an infringement to the penalty again. The PSG star was never going to miss the second opportunity, and slotted coolly from 12 yards.

Kolo Muani and Jules Kounde also had good opportunities for France. Moreover, Greece defender Konstantinos Mavropanos was sent-off for a foul on Muani in the 69th minute.

France only managed two shots on goals in the first half, as Greece were defending firmly. It was only Mavropanos red card that changed the game for Les Blues.

Kylian Mbappe breaks Just Fontaine’s record with a goal against Greece

The Frenchman scored his 13th goal of the season for France to go with 41 goals for PSG in all competitions. He is one goal away to equal Michel Platini’s record for France. The PSG striker has now scored 40 goals in 70 games for his country.

France’s win against Greece leaves them on top of qualifying Group B with 12 points from four games. They are yet to concede a goal in the qualifiers and are six points clear of Greece.

After the game, France coach Didier Deschamps said, “It has been a very long season for the players. They have been waiting for their holidays, but we did what we needed to do to win the match. This is a team with less experience than six months ago, but there is plenty of quality.”

France will now look to maintain their 100% record in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. They face the Republic of Ireland in their next qualifier on September 7.
