Jose Mourinho: AS Roma sacks legendary manager after a string of poor results; replacements lined up

AS Roma has sacked legendary manager Jose Mourinho, who was at helm since last two years, as the Italian giants seem to have fared quite poorly in this season. Standing on a mediocre ninth position, Mourinho was rumored to be removed from the helm quite a few days ago, as reports of his expulsion were swirling in the media.

Jose Mourinho- the special one

Jose Mourinho has been one of the managerial metronomes across the years, whose name would be equivocally pronounced among some of the greatest football managers of the world. Starting with Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique, Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, Mourinho has lodged himself into that status as he is well-known for his exploits with each club he has managed. He has the exceptional caliber of winning trophies everywhere he goes, including lesser-known teams like Porto, whom he had crowned the Champions of Europe, using the sources he have at his exposure.

Followed by exuberant and successful stints at Porto and Benfica, Mourinho ventured into another country to showcase his skills, as his tenure at Chelsea marked a significant era for the Blues. Later, after three years at Stamford Bridge, he went to ply his trade at Italian football arena, to coach Inter Milan, thus embarking upon a new era with the Nerazzuris. His exploits earned him the name of “The Special One”, as he belongs to the respective cadre of brilliant coaches who can change the game from the sidelines.

String of poor results led to harsh decision

Mourinho joined the Italian capital on May 2021, and had steered the wheel in his direction when he won the Europa Conference League title. Next season, he took the side to a much-anticipated Europa League final, which was considered to be one of the biggest points in his career as he took his side to two consecutive finals at the international stage. But, unfortunately, he had lost to Sevilla, thus the record of him winning every European final being dashed by serial Europa League winners from Spain.

This season, the Italian giants are reeling on a mediocre ninth position, as Roma are five points off the Champions League qualifying spot, and have been knocked out of Coppa Italia by crosstown rivals Lazio last week. Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin mentioned about their gratitude to the “Special One”, as they thanked Mourinho “for the passion and commitment he has shown” as a manager. They further added, “We will always have great memories of his stewardship, but we believe that, in the best interests of the club, immediate change is necessary.”

He was shown a red card in the match against Lazio, which was followed by a 1-3 loss in the hands of AC Milan, which led the Italian capital to be five points adrift of fourth-placed Fiorentina, thus leading to his sacking. The former Real Madrid manager, who had etched his name among the history books, was finally shown the door, after some poor results which has helped Roma legend Daniele De Rossi to be named among his successor.
