Jordan Thompson Stuns Stefanos Tsitsipas at Indian Wells, Ends Greek’s No. 1 Hopes

Australian Jordan Thompson pulled off a major upset at the 2023 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, defeating second-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in a thrilling match. The victory ended Tsitsipas’s chances of rising to World No. 1 across the ‘Sunshine Double’ events in Indian Wells and Miami.

Jordan Thompson’s victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas was a nail-biting affair, with the Australian emerging triumphant after a two-hour, 37-minute battle.

The match saw both players fight fiercely, with Tsitsipas rallying to level the match after dropping the opening set. However, Thompson held his nerve in the deciding-set tie-break, winning 7-6(0), 4-6, 7-6(5) to claim the biggest victory of his career.

Thompson Advances to Third Round

The victory sees Jordan Thompson advance to the third round of the Indian Wells tournament for the first time in his career. Thompson, who is currently ranked World No. 87, defeated Gael Monfils in straight sets in his opening match. He will now face either Maxime Cressy or Alejandro Tabilo in the third round.

After the match, Jordan Thompson expressed his joy and disbelief at the victory, saying, “It’s unreal. At a Masters 1000, in the [Indian Wells] Tennis Garden here. It’s one of my favourite tournaments, I think a lot of players’ favourite tournaments to play. To have a win like that is incredible. [I’m] really happy.”

Thompson’s Winning Strategy

Jordan Thompson revealed that his strategy for the match was to focus on his serve and take control of his service points. He dropped only two points on serve to win the opening set, while Tsitsipas struggled to find his rhythm.

Although the Greek rallied to level the match, Thompson stayed aggressive on serve and held his nerve to claim the victory. Reflecting on the match, Thompson said, “I wanted to take control of my service points. Obviously, I can’t do much about his, he’s a big guy and he’s got a great serve. I wasn’t finding too much rhythm there on return towards the end but snuck one out. I stayed aggressive on serve and very thankful that last ball went wide.”

Jordan Thompson’s victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas marks his second Top 10 win, having lost his previous two meetings against the Greek player. However, he showed great determination and resilience in this match to secure the win.

Thompson Takes Tournament One Match at a Time

Despite his victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jordan Thompson is taking the tournament one match at a time. He said, “I haven’t even actually looked forward [in the draw].

I just saw my match today. I had a tough one in the first round as well, strange match with Monfils coming back [from injury]. It’s been a tricky draw but I haven’t actually looked forward.”
