Jofra Archer set to return as England announce squad for South Africa tour

The much-awaited comeback is over. Jofra Archer has been recalled into the England ODI squad for the first time in over a year. He was named in a 14-men squad for a three match one-day-international series against South Africa starting from January 27.

Jofra Archer, as recognised as one of the world’s most hostile fast bowlers, will be seen back in English colors after being named in the 14 member squad for ODIs against South Africa. He was completely out of action for almost two years owing to injuries.

The past one and a half-year had been really tough for the Barbados-born as he was completely out of cricketing action. Archer’s last international appearance dates back to March 2021 when England took on India in a T-20i match in Ahmedabad.

Since then, the Sussex pace bowler’s bright career has taken a hit due to several injuries. First, being affected by a persistent elbow injury and then he had to miss action owing to a back injury. After missing almost the entire of 2022 recovering from injuries, Archer  made an appearance for the second-string England Lions team that took on the Test Team in a warm up match in Abu Dhabi last month ahead of England’s Pakistan tour.

Jofra Archer to return to England’s squad

Archer straight away hit England opener Zak Crawley in the head with a bouncer which gave prominent signs that he was recovering well and could sense a comeback that all England fans were waiting for. He is also set to play two matches for MI Cape town in the inaugural SA20 league just ahead of the South African tour.

Jofra Archer had played a pivotal role in England’s 2019 World Cup triumph. Known for his hostile bowling, Archer’s return would certainly make the English bowling look more lethal and prepare a core ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup for the defending champions.

Meanwhile promising star Harry Brooke, has also been called in for the South Africa ODIs for the first time after some stellar performances with the bat in the recently concluded test series against Pakistan.

England ODI squad: Jos Buttler (c/wk), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Harry Brooke, Sam Curran, Dawid Malan, Ben Duckett, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Olly Stone, Phil Salt, Chris Woakes, Reece Topley, David Willey.
