James Maddison: Tottenham star withdrawn from England squad, to be on the sidelines till January

Tottenham might have faced one of the biggest injury scare this season after their star midfielder James Maddison has been withdrawn from the England squad which was slated to face Malta and North Macedonia in European Qualifiers.

Maddison withdrawn from National squad

James Maddison, the undisputed midfield maestro for Ange Postecoglou’s side has been in a red-hot form this season. He has showcased his true mettle this season after switching his allegiance to Spurs from newly relegated Leicester City. His exuberant skills with the ball, coupled with exceptional agility to assist it to his teammates has been the talk of the town. He seems to have made a new friend in football, with Son Heung-Min, the Spurs skipper, and this enterprising duo of Maddison-Son have won hearts of fans. Currently, the “Lilywhites” are off to their best season in recent years, on the second spot, staying on pole position after first ten games, unbeaten. Their first loss of the season came against arch rivals Chelsea in last weekend, where they were defeated 1-4 by the Blues’, in a frantic match glittered by VAR controversies and disallowed goals.

Maddison, however, did suffer a knock in the first half against Chelsea on Monday, when he was taken off by Postecoglou. But, later it was indicated that the injury was not a severe blow, thus Postecoglou being optimistic on taking him off, citing as a precautionary measure after Romero’s suspension. The former Celtic tactician was heard saying to BBC Sport after the game, “He got a knock on the ankle. We were down one man already. It made sense to make a couple of changes at that point.”

More injury scare for Ange, as Maddison withdrawn from National squad

But, according to latest reports, it is reportedly something which any Spurs fan would not want to hear. Spurs have confirmed that Maddison has effectively been ruled out from international duties, which also automatically removes him from their weekend trip to Wolves. Ange’s men are scheduled to meet another strong side in their Premier League fixture, Wolves, which is definitely a stern test for the London side, especially after the mauling they had faced in the hands of Chelsea.

Along with Madds, defender Van de Ven is also forced on the sidelines, and they might be out for a prolonged period. The official club statement read, “We can confirm that James Maddison has been withdrawn from the England squad due to an ankle injury. The midfielder will not feature in the Three Lions’ UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, and will remain at Hotspur Way for rehabilitation with the Club’s medical staff.”
