IPL 2023: Rohit Sharma urges senior players to step up after brutal loss at Wankhede

Mumbai Indians Captain Rohit Sharma admitted that the changeroom decisions haven’t been executed well on the field as Mumbai Indians lost against Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.

Batting first, Mumbai Indians managed a below-par 157/8 in 20 overs with Ishan Kishan’s 32 off 21 balls and ‘Impact Player’ Tim David’s 31 off 22 balls being the principle contributions. Ravindra Jadeja with 3/20 was the most successful bowler for CSK.

Senior guys need to step up, starting with me: Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma hid no disappointment in accepting that Mumbai Indians haven’t performed to their level in the opening two games of the IPL 2023 season with the latest defeat coming against Chennai Super Kings in Mumbai on Saturday. He urged senior players, including him, need to step up their performances in the coming games.

“We have got a couple of young guys and got to give some time to them. They have real talent and we have to back them and show trust in their ability which we are doing. The senior guys need to step up starting with me,” Sharma said at the post-match press conference after defeating to CSK.

Sharma further urged that there are young players in the team and that the team management will be patient with them. Sharma, who scored just one in the last game, scored 21 in a hapless batting display by the entire team. Likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Tim David couldn’t make substantial contributions to help the team pose a challenging total.

Mumbai skipper also credited the opposition spinners

The Mumbai skipper also credited the opposition spinners – Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner. “Got to credit their spinners, they bowled well and kept us under pressure. You need to try out different things, you need to attack and be brave,” he added.

“Things we speak in the changeroom has not worked in the middle. We know we had a very disappointing last season, but we always start afresh, even when we won the 5 trophies, we never thought we won it last year.” Mumbai Indians will next play Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 11.
