IPL 2023: Gill’s gutsy 104* in final group game knocks out Royal Challengers Bangalore; MI qualifies

IPL 2023, RCB vs GT: At the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by a margin of six wickets in their final IPL 2023 league match.

IPL 2023, RCB vs GT Highlights: GT reached 198/4 in 19.1 overs, needing 198 runs to win, with Shubman Gill hitting the decisive six. With the six, Gill slammed an undefeated 104 runs off 52 balls, smashing eight sixes and five fours in the process.

Siraj grabbed two wickets for RCB in the meantime. The game was first postponed owing to rain, and Virat Kohli, acting alone, led RCB to 197/5 in 20 overs with a legendary 101* off 61 balls, packed with 13 fours and a maximum.

Shubman Gill’s ton overshadow King Kohli’s historical feat

Virat Kohli scored 101 runs to lead RCB to 197/5 in 20 overs as he hammered his second consecutive century. Gujarat Titans required 198 runs to win, while RCB needs a victory to go to the IPL 2023 playoffs.

Anuj Rawat scored 23 in 15 balls and Faf du Plessis scored 28 in 19 balls to help his team’s total reach 197 runs. Only Shikhar Dhawan and Jos Buttler have scored back-to-back hundreds in IPL history, and Kohli is the second.

Taking a leaf out of his inspiration’s book, Shubman Gill of the Gujarat Titans emulated Virat Kohli by scoring his second consecutive century on Sunday against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

With the help of five fours and eight sixes, he reached the milestone as GT eliminated RCB from the match and Mumbai Indians secured the final play-off berth. Another resemblance between him and Kohli is that Gill also got a century against SRH last Monday, and the RCB batter’s most recent century was also against them.

Gujarat’s chase got off to a rough start when they cheaply lost Wriddhiman Saha, but a huge 123-run partnership between Gill and Vijay Shankar helped Gujarat retake the initiative from Bangalore.

Gill persisted after Shankar was removed by Vijaykumar Vyshak on 53, striking a century (104) of his own to help Gujarat, the defending champions, defeat Bangalore with their tenth victory of the year.

IPL 2023, RCB vs GT: Titans Knock RCB out to make way for MI

While GT have already qualified for the playoffs and will end the league phase as table toppers. Gill’s knock smacked RCB’s hopes of playoff qualification and made way for Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indian’s.

Earlier in the day, Mumbai Indians put up a solid batting performance to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in their final IPL league match at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday but were left to hope for a Gujarat Titans victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore later in Bengaluru.

After SRH did well to post 200, MI needed one of their batters to play a blinder. Cameron Green was MI’s hero. On a batting paradise, he blazed away to an unbeaten 100 (47b, 8×4, 8×6) to set up an eight-wicket win to keep his side alive till the last league game.
