IPL 2023 DC vs LSG: Kyle Mayers and Mark Wood star as Lucknow hands Delhi a Moral-shattering Defeat

IPL 2023 DC vs LSG: Kyle Mayers’ brilliance with the bat and Mark Wood’s five-wicket haul handed Lucknow Super Giants a 50-run win in their opening match of IPL 2023 against Delhi Capitals on Saturday.

Mayers scored 73 runs while Wood ended up with figures of 5/14 in his four overs as the Capitals crumbled in their chase of 194 runs in Lucknow.

Catch Dropped, Match Dropped: Mayers’ was at 14 and struggling while Ahmed dropped a dolly

Earlier, Kyle Mayers made the Delhi Capitals pay for a sensational dropped catch opening the batting for Lucknow Super Giants. Mayers went off to a slow start and Khaleel Ahmed gave him a life when he was on 14 with an utterly unbelievable dropped catch. The drop was only part of what has been a horrendous show in the field from Delhi Capitals, particularly in the first 10 overs.

Mayers responded by smashing the DC bowlers all over the park and racing past 50 in just 28 balls. He eventually fell to a quite extraordinary delivery from Axar Patel on 73 off 38 balls. However, LSG kept the pace of the innings up with young Ayush Badoni smashing 18 off seven balls.

DC brought on Krishnappa Gowtham to face the last ball as an impact player for Badoni as soon as the latter got out and the former ended up smashing the only ball he faced for a six. LSG thus ended up reaching a score of 193/6 in 20 overs.

Delhi Capitals got off to a good start with Prithvi Shaw and David Warner going at over 10 an over for the first four. However, Mark Wood came in and wreaked havoc in the fifth over, dismissing Shaw and Mitchell Marsh off consecutive balls to peg DC back in their 194-run chase. 

Axar played a couple of lusty blows but he was Wood’s fourth victim of the day. It wasn’t to be as Wood came back and took two more and ended the match with extraordinary figures of 5/14.
