Ahead of the toss, Arjun was seen having an intense conversation with his father Sachin, who has been long associated with the franchise, first as a player and now as a mentor. Later, regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who has not been included in the first XI for the match against KKR owing to “stomach bug”, as explained by stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav, joined the conversation with Sachin with the duo trying to motivate the 23-year-old ahead of his debut at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Arjun’s sister, Sara, too was spotted in the stands.

Arjun bowled the first over of the match and conceded just four runs. He got the ball to swing sharply into KKR opener N. Jagadeesan, resulting in a huge LBW appeal, which was turned down by the on-field umpire. Mumbai didn’t take the review and replays showed that the ball would have gone over the stumps.

However, in his second over in the PowerPlay, Arjun was taken for 13 runs as Venkatesh Iyer smashed him for a four and a six off consecutive deliveries.

Arjun was first bought by Mumbai Indians at the IPL 2021 auction for Rs. 20 lakh and went for Rs. 30 lakh in 2022, with Gujarat Titans being the only other team making a bid for him. The 23-year-old was retained by Mumbai Indians ahead of the mini-auction in December last year.

Another Jensen brother makes his IPL debut

22-year-old South African pace bowler Duan Jansen is also making his Indian Premier League (IPL 2023) debut for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the same match. It is a big moment for the Jansen family as Duan Jansen who is the twin brother of left-arm pacer Marco Jansen is getting to play in the Indian Premier League for the Mumbai Indians, moreover, Duan is also a lanky left-arm fast bowler who has a chance to showcase his potential at the biggest stage of all.
