IOC Urges Indian Olympic Association to Address Wrestling Issue and Appoint Key Officials

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has reiterated its call to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to tackle the wrestling issue and fulfill crucial appointments. Following their executive board meeting, the IOC emphasized the importance of collaboration with the United World Wrestling (UWW) and adherence to international federation rules and directives.

Urgent Compliance with International Federation Rules

The IOC has urged the IOA to closely collaborate with the International Federations to resolve ongoing issues affecting Indian Sports Federations. It is essential for the IOA to align its actions with the rules and directives of the respective International Federations, particularly regarding the Wrestling Federation in India. The IOC has stressed the need for compliance and adherence to ensure a smooth functioning of the sport.

In response to the ongoing disputes within state bodies, the IOA has decided to defer the wrestling federation elections by five days, extending the timeline to July 11. This additional time will allow the IOA to address the internal conflicts and foster an environment conducive to fair and transparent elections. Wrestlers, who had been protesting against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment, have resumed their training in preparation for the upcoming Asian Games selection trials.

Delays in Key Appointments

Despite the IOA’s commitment to resolving the wrestling issue, there have been delays in appointing a full-time chief executive officer (CEO) and secretary-general, as mandated by the IOA’s constitution. The IOA committee, led by PT Usha, has not yet finalized these crucial appointments since assuming power in December 2022. The IOC has been closely monitoring the situation and emphasizes the urgency to appoint qualified individuals who can efficiently lead the organization.

The IOC has repeatedly directed the NOC of India to expedite the appointment process for the new CEO and secretary-general in accordance with the IOA’s constitution. The prompt finalization of these appointments is crucial for normalizing the situation within the IOA. Although Kalyan Chaubey, president of the All India Football Federation, has been nominated as an acting CEO, the IOC’s approval is still pending.

The IOC’s call for collaboration and compliance underscores the importance of addressing the wrestling issue and fulfilling key appointments within the IOA. The IOA’s decision to postpone the wrestling federation elections reflects their commitment to resolving internal disputes.
