INDvsWI 1st Test: What an amazing turnaround for Ashwin! After being passed over for the WTC final, he went on to take 12 wickets in Dominica’s first Test match against the West Indies. He made history by becoming the first Indian bowler to ever notch up five wicket totals in both innings of a Test in the Windies.

After declaring their first inning at 421 for five and outscoring West Indies by 271 runs, Indian spinners had an immediate impact. Before tea, Ashwin and Jadeja reduced West Indies’ deficit to 4 runs, and they continued to trouble the hitters in the following session. In the end, the seasoned player got 7 wickets in the innings, compared to Jadeja’s 2 and Mohammed Siraj’s 1.

India had fallen down by five runs earlier in the day after losing Virat Kohli just after lunch. After Ishan Kishan got his first Test run, Rohit Sharma gave the all-clear. Before Rahkeem Cornwall claimed 76 wickets in the second session, Kohli was dropped on the third ball. Yashasvi Jaiswal made his debut with a score of 171, however West Indies eventually sent him back after Alzarri Joseph won the gold medal. Ajinkya Rahane’s careless dismissal for three runs brought about one and two, keeping the Windies’ fight alive.

At Windsor Park in Dominica on Saturday, day 3 of the first Test match against the West Indies, Ravichandran Ashwin recorded a 10-wicket haul.

Ashwin tied former India captain Anil Kumble for the most 10-wicket hauls for India in Test matches with his seventh 10-for in the format. When Rakheem Cornwall surrendered his catch to Shubman Gill at forward short leg in the 47th over, Ashwin accomplished the feat.

The 36-year-old tied Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath for sixth place in Test wickets with seven wickets in the second innings, giving him 34 five-wicket hauls overall. In just three days, he helped India defeat the West Indies by 141 runs with an innings figures of 21.3-7-71-7.

In a Test match in the Caribbean, the illustrious spinner also boasts the distinction of having the best-ever bowling stats by an Indian of 46-13-131-12.

Earlier, the off-spinner helped India defeat the West Indies for 150 by taking five wickets in the first inning. Alzarri Joseph was taken out by Ashwin in the 53rd over of the first innings, giving him 700 wickets overall in international cricket.

After Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, he was the third Indian and 17th person overall to reach the milestone. When he removed Tagenarine Chanderpaul on the first day of the match, he also earned the prestigious distinction of taking the wickets of both a father and son in his remarkable Test career.

When Ashwin first played in the longest format, a Test, in New Delhi in 2011, he dismissed Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s father Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
