India Women creates history by winning inaugural Women’s U19 T20 World Cup; End ICC Tournament drought

After a dominant run in the tournament, India defeated England by seven wickets in the final to win inaugural Women’s U19 T20 World Cup. India dismissed England for 68 and chased down the target in 14 overs. It’s the first time that India won a women’s ICC tournament.

Indian Women win U19 T20 World Cup

After a superb bowling performance coupled with some outstanding fielding helped India bowl out England for just 68, Soumya (24 not out) and Trisha (24) stitched a vital partnership to give India their first-ever World Cup title in women’s cricket.

The historic moment comes in the country where India first made it to the final of a World Cup 18 years ago, during the 2005 ODI World Cup. Earlier, India had finished runners-up at Women’s World Cup in 2005 and 2017 and Women’s T20 World Cup in 2020.

Women’s U19 T20 World Cup Final Highlights:

IND-W chased down a modest target of 69 runs after ENG-W were bowled out for 68. After India losing both openers – captain Shafali Verma and leading run-scorer Shweta Sehrawat early in their chase against England Women they were sent on backfoot. Nonetheless, Soumya Tiwari and Gongadi Trisha kept the score moving.

Soumya finished off the chase with a brace and then took a single through point to give India their first global trophy in women’s cricket and to trigger euphoria among the Indian camp.

Earlier, Titas Sadhu, Archana Devi and Parshavi Chopra grabbed 2 wickets each, while Mannat Kashyap, Shafali Verma and Soman Yadav picked one each to dismiss ENG-W for a low total. Only 4 ENG-W batters could enter double digits with Rayana Macdonald-Gay top scoring with 19. India headed into the finals after a thumping victory over New Zealand, whom they defeated by eight wickets. England, on the other hand, defeated Australia in a low-scoring encounter

Shafali Verma Tears up after creating history

Young batting sensation, Shafali Verma gets emotional while talking about her team’s journey in the tournament.

“The way all the girls are performing and backing each other, so happy. Incredible feeling. Thanks to the staff, the way they have been backing us everyday and telling us that we are here for the cup and because of them we are here. All thanks to them. The players have been backing me a lot. Thanks to BCCI for giving me this beautiful team and really happy for winning the cup”, said Verma.

Interestingly, Indian Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra was in the stadium and he looked absolutely cock-a-hoop. He was seen cheering the Indian girls and is all smiles. Moreover, a day before the final Chopra was invited to share some words of motivation with the girls.
