India vs Sri Lanka: India ends Sri Lanka’s 13-winning streak in ODI cricket, Book a slot in the final of Asia Cup 2023

India vs Sri Lanka: On Tuesday, September 12, India defeated Sri Lanka by 41 runs in the Super Match at R Premadasa Stadium, ending their 13-match winning streak in ODIs.

Sri Lanka surpassed South Africa to become the side with the second-best streak in ODI cricket history after their winning start in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup against Bangladesh.

From June 2023 until their match against India at the Asia Cup 2023, Sri Lanka have won 13 straight one-day international matches.

Previously, the second-best streak was in the hands of South Africa, who had won 12 matches between February to October 2005.

The best winning streak in ODI cricket history is 21 wins by Australia, between January 2003 to May 2003.

Rohit Sharma’s 50 leads the sinking Indian batting ship past 200+ mark

It was a dry pitch and Dunith Wellalage, the all-around player, never made a mistake. Part-time off-spinner Charith Asalanka and India’s more skilled tweakers also attended the event. However, in a low-scoring match, India’s opening bat-and-ball combination proved to be the deciding factor between the two teams.

The Men in Blue ended Sri Lanka’s 13-match winning streak with a decisive 41-run victory, riding on the 80-run partnership between captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill as well as a blazing opening spell from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. India now has two games left in the Super 4s stage and will play in Sunday’s Asia Cup final thanks to the victory.

Both teams stacked their lineups with spinners since a dry surface offered next to the one used for India’s match versus Pakistan, which ended out being a two-day event. Axar Patel took the place of Shardul Thakur on India’s XI. Axar did assist India in passing the 200-run threshold with some wise batting near the end, but without Rohit’s heroics in the PowerPlay, India might not have been able to reach the total it did.

Rohit’s carefree grace was often on display, whether it was in a sharp drive off Kasun Rajitha in the first over or in the straight six over the pacer’s head that enabled the veteran to pass Virat Kohli (205 innings) as the second-fastest player to 10,000 ODI runs. With four boundaries to welcome Dasun Shanaka into the attack, he pursued him before sending Matheesha Pathirana’s short ball over the ropes. Shanaka removed himself during the 12th over and was replaced by Wellalage.

India vs Sri Lanka: Riding on Kuldeep Yadav’s 4-fer, India books a slot in the final of Asia Cup 2023

The left-arm spinner gave the hosts a chance to retake the lead by striking once in each of his opening three overs. He removed Virat Kohli (the ball stuck in the pitch and the attempted flick was caught at short midwicket), Shubman Gill (undone in flight), and Rohit (skidded and kept low). Then, the visitors had trouble adding runs. As India was bowled out for 213, Wellalage added two more victims to become the 20-year-old Sri Lankan with the youngest five-wicket haul in ODI play, while Asalanka destroyed the lower order.

Then, Bumrah and Siraj displayed their poise by landing three PowerPlay strikes. Both were essentially impossible to bat against, with the former taking two wickets. Kuldeep Yadav scored twice quickly one after the other, taking out the fast Sadeera Samarawickrama.

Sri Lanka fell to 99 for six after Ravindra Jadeja coaxed an edge off Shanaka to Rohit at slip. But Dhananjaya de Silva discovered a capable ally in Wellalage, and the two provided the largest turnout with a lot of energy and a glimmer of optimism.

However, the 63-run partnership was ended by Gill’s quick catch of Dhananjaya at mid-on. Kuldeep sprinted through the pack to give India an easy victory.
