IND vs AFG 3rd T20I: What happens if second Super-Over also ends in a tie? Explained

The third T20I clash between India and Afghanistan on January 17 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru etched its name as the first-ever international game to witness two super overs. The change in the super overrule by the International Cricket Council (ICC) came after the dramatic ODI World Cup 2019 final between England and New Zealand.

Under the new rules, if the first super over ends in a tie, the two teams will continue playing subsequent super overs until a clear winner emerges. This was evident in the third T20I where India and Afghanistan engaged in a second super over after tying the score on 17 in the first one. The question arose about the possibility of a third super over if the teams tied again in the second instance.

Explained full rules of Super-Over of the dramatic India vs Afghanistan 3rd T20I

According to the updated ICC playing conditions, teams will play as many super-overs as necessary until one surpasses the other’s score or restricts the opposition to a lower total.

Additionally, the same bowler cannot bowl in consecutive super-overs. In the India vs. Afghanistan match, Afghanistan’s request for Azmatullah Omarzai to bowl the second super over was denied, and Fareed Ahmed bowled instead. Similarly, Mukesh Kumar bowled the first super over for India, and Ravi Bishnoi bowled the second one.

The team that batted first in the main match bats second in the super over, maintaining continuity for efficiency. Regarding batters, those who were not dismissed or retired hurt in the first super-over can be listed for the second one. However, a batter dismissed or retired in the first super over cannot participate in the second. There has been discussion around Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who walked out to bat in the second super over against Afghanistan after retiring himself out. Clarity is awaited on whether Rohit retired himself out or got retired hurt during the first super over, and official confirmation is pending.
