Ilkay Gundogan can leave Barcelona for free due to a shock contract clause

New summer signing Ilkay Gundogan can leave Barcelona for free if he isn’t registered in time for their La Liga opener against Getafe.

According to Forbes, a clause in his contract allows him to walk out of the club on Sunday as a free agent if they don’t register him before the Getafe clash.

Gundogan joined the Catalan giants in June on a free transfer from Man City. He turned down a contract renewal offer from the Treble winners to join Barca.

Moreover, the club have only registered 13 players with La Liga. Gundogan and other new signings are still not registered with La Liga. Reports in Spain say that Gundogan would still be paid for an entire year. If this happens, then Barcelona will face a lot of troubles.

Ilkay Gundogan can leave Barcelona, can the club register him in time?

The potential departure of Ousmane Dembele to Paris Saint-Germain and Franck Kessie to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli will help to reduce their salary bill.

Moreover, President Joan Laporta is also ready to sell a 16% stake in Barca Studios worth €65 million to a German investment firm to boost the finances.

The German midfielder’s time at Barcelona have not started in a way that he would’ve liked. After making a second-half appearance against Arsenal, he was limped out of the 3-0 win over rivals Real Madrid in Texas.

Gundogan also appeared in the second half against Tottenham in a 4-2 in the Joan Gamper Cup match. With only a few days remaining until Barca’s La Liga opener against Getafe on Sunday, the clock is ticking for Barcelona to finalise Gundogan’s registration.

Laporta is also working to sell 49% of Barca Studios to Mountain Nazca for €180 million, a private equity fund manager. Barcelona will receive €30 million before the end of the transfer window. So, if deal goes through Barcelona will register the new signings including Gundogan and new contracts as well.
