ICC U-19 Women’s World Cup: India creates history; Becomes the first team to cross 200-run mark

The India u-19 women’s team is going from strength to strength in the ongoing ICC Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup. India is strangling the United Arab Emirates in their second group stage match at the Willowmoore Park on Monday following a smashing victory over the tournament hosts, South Africa, in their U19 Women’s T20 World Cup opener.

After UAE inviting India to bat first, Indian openers Shefali Verma and Shweta Sehrawat caused havoc in the UAE ranks. They put up a record opening stand of 111 runs which set the tone of the Indian innings.

India posted a mammoth total of 219/3 on the board on the back of this lightning batting performance. With this, India became the first team to score an excess of 200 runs in U-19 Women’s World Cup.

Shefali and Shweta continue their golden run at the top

This historic moment was led by Captain Shefali Verma who scored her first half century of the tournament. She was India’s top scorer with 78 runs from just 34 balls in double quick time. At a strike rate of 229.41, Shefali hit twelve fours and four sixes in her power pack innings.

In her onslaught, Shweta Sehrawat too played a fiery innings of 74 runs from 49 balls with ten fours which powered the Indian total to this record breaking feat. This was Shweta’s second fifty on the trot in the tournament after her match winning 92 not out in the opening match against South Africa.

Richa Ghosh provided the finishing touch to the innings with a 29-ball 49 runs with five fours and two sixes which summed up this exhilarating batting performance from India.

This is a historic moment as no other team had managed to cross the 200-run mark in U-19 Women’s World Cup before. This will be written in the record books and will surely inspire more and more young women to take up the sport.

The Indian team will next take on Scotland on 18th January in Benoni.
