Go and hammer West Indies 2-0; it won’t mean anything: Sunil Gavaskar slams Team India

Sunil Gavaskar slams Team India: Team India’s hopes of winning their first WTC Final were dashed as they were humiliated by Australia in London’s Kennington Oval. India hasn’t triumphed in an ICC final in the past ten years, while Australia became the first side to win a final trophy across all ICC competitions.

One of Indian cricket’s most renowned commentators, Sunil Gavaskar, is among many who are quite upset with India’s performance against Australia in the World Test Championship final in London. Gavskar questioned India’s strategy and discussed all the crucial issues that the entire team has to address.

Go and hammer West Indies 2-0; it won’t mean anything: Sunil Gavaskar slams Team India

“I have been in the teams where we have been knocked out at 42 and we had been miserable in the change rooms. We were also criticised heavily. So, I think you cannot say that the current lot is not beyond criticism. They have to be very analytical about what happened, how they get out, why didn’t they bowl well, why didn’t they catch, was the selection of the Playing XI was the right thing, so all these factors have to come in,” said Gavaskar on Star Sports.

Team India will travel West Indies in July for an all-format series in the wake of the disastrous WTC Final, and they are unquestionably the favourites to ‘win it all’ on the Caribbean island. A furious Gavaskar argued that if India keeps making the same mistakes it made in the WTC 2023 Final vs. Australia, winning bilateral series against West Indies will signify nothing.

“You cannot brush this under the carpet like ‘yeah we have got two matches against West Indies’. West Indies are not the best team in the world. You just go and hammer them 2-0, 3-0, whatever the matches are. This doesn’t mean anything because when you come across and if you go to the finals and if you are playing Australia again, making the same mistakes, then how would you win the trophy?” he added.

“You Can’t Be Asking…”: Sunil Gavaskar’s Blunt Response To Rohit Sharma On ‘3-Match WTC Final’ Demand

Sunil Gavaskar, a legendary batsman, criticised Rohit Sharma for making the suggestion to play a three-match series in the upcoming World Test Championship final after Australia captain Pat Cummins disagreed with it and said that every team should be mentally prepared before competing in such significant events.

Addressing the media after the match, Rohit had said, “I would like to play the 3-Test match series for the WTC Final. We worked hard and we fought, but we played just 1 game. I think a 3-match series would be ideal in the next WTC cycle.”

Expressing his thoughts on Rohit’s suggestion, Gavaskar said, “No. This has been decided for a long time, you know even before you enter that first match of the cycle that the final is going to be just one-off. So, you have to be prepared mentally.”

“Just like you prepare for the IPL, you don’t say best of three. Everybody can have a bad day, or a couple of days, but before the first ball of the cycle you know what it is. So, you can’t be asking for a best of three. Tomorrow, you may say best of five”

He added

Earlier, Gavaskar had slammed Virat Kohli for his poor shot selection, which led to his dismissal in WTC Final on Day 5, which was one of the biggest turning points in the match as well.

“It was a pretty ordinary shot. Outside the off stump. He was leaving till then. Maybe he was conscious that he needed one run to reach his half century. It happens when you are nearing a milestone,” said Gavaskar on Star Sports.
