Gianni Infantino re-elected as FIFA president for third term until 2027

Gianni Infantino has been re-elected as the President of FIFA until 2027 at the 71st Congress held in Rwanda. The 52-year-old Swiss lawyer was uncontested and appointed for his third term by acclamation, just as he was in 2016, by delegates from 211 member federations.

Although FIFA statutes limit a president to a maximum of three four-year terms, Infantino has already prepared the ground to stay until 2031, declaring in December that his first three years at the helm did not count as a full term. This plan will require the backing of the FIFA Council, which is anticipated given Infantino’s widespread support.

Infantino’s Achievements

Infantino’s re-election comes as a result of overseeing the expansion of both the men’s and women’s World Cup and increasing FIFA revenues. The men’s World Cup will increase from 32 teams to 48 for the next edition in North America in 2026, while the women’s World Cup will feature 32 teams for the first time in Australia and New Zealand later this year.

Infantino has also announced projected income of $11 billion in the four years up to 2026, compared to $7.5 billion in the last four-year cycle ending in 2022. This indicates the growth of FIFA revenues under his leadership, giving the organization more funds to invest in football development worldwide.

Infantino, who staunchly defended Qatar’s hosting of last year’s World Cup, has been criticized for the Gulf state’s treatment of migrant workers, women and the LGBTQ community. He defended the decision and stated that FIFA is a force for good in the world, promoting social justice and development through football.

Infantino’s Vision for FIFA

Infantino’s vision for FIFA is to make football truly global, making it accessible to everyone and bringing people together through the sport. His re-election is a clear indication of his widespread support among the member federations.

Infantino’s re-election marks a significant moment in FIFA’s history as it continues to develop and grow under his leadership. He has promised to continue to work towards a more transparent, accountable, and responsible FIFA, ensuring that football remains the world’s most popular and loved sport.
