WPL Auction 2023: The inaugural auction of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 was held at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai on Monday.
A total of 448 cricketers went under the hammer – of which 269 were Indians and 179 overseas (19 of those players were from the Associate Nations).
A total of 87 Players going under the hammer and INR 59,50,00,000 splurged collectively amongst the five franchises – Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and UP Warriorz. While, The drama and excitement in the bidding wars were just glimpses of what promises a breathtaking and enthralling inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League.
However, there were 361 players that went unsold, a few of which came out as a shocker for the cricket fraternity.

Over the years, the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction has thrown in some huge surprises and the inaugural Women’s Premier League auction has done no different.
While quite a few of the occurrences were on the expected lines, there were still a few decisions that left pundits and fans shell-shocked. For instance, a few top international players who were expected to go big at the WPL 2023 auction were simply ignored by the franchises.
England all-rounders Dani Wyatt and Katherine Sciver-Brunt, who had a base price of ₹50 lakh each, went unsold. Moreover, India fast bowler Meghna Singh also didn’t find any takers. Other prominent players who went unsold include Alana King, Priya Punia, Punam Raut, Charlotte Dean, Chamari Athapaththu, and Suné Luus.
