Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting pelted with grapes during the fifth Ashes test

The incident took place when Ricky was reporting on day one of the fifth test

In a bizarre incident, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting was pelted with grapes by a section of spectators when he was at the ground reporting on day one of the fifth Ashes test. The Australian legend was left furious by this incident. Fans were disappointed after England were unable to make a mark on day one of the Oval test and were bowled out for 283. The fans reacted to their team’s performance by pelting grapes on the former Australian batter. Ponting was clearly unhappy with the behavior of the fans. After the incident, Ponting said “I’ve just been hit by a grape,” “I wouldn’t mind finding out who that was actually.”

Ponting critical of England’s batting

Ponting was also quite critical of England’s batting as they were bowled out for 283. In the words of Ponting “One thing we have to come to expect with the way England are playing their cricket is that they are going to lose wickets in clumps,” he said “They haven’t really got anyone who is going to come in and sit. Even Joe [Root] has changed his game a lot. “Today was a good opportunity for him, after England lost a couple of wickets, to come in and really knuckle down, put some of those shots away, and play a normal Test inning. “But with the free-scoring way England wants to play, he probably plays a shot that he would have back again. It could have been a better day for England.”

Root’s baffling statement

Prior to the fifth and final test at the Oval, former England captain Joe Root said that they could have played till 10 PM. The statement came after the fourth test ended in a draw due to rain on the final day which helped Australia retain the Ashes. In the words of Joe Root “It doesn’t get dark here in England until 10 pm in the summer, why can’t we just play until we bowl the overs “There’s been a lot of chat about not bowling the overs. “There are so many different ways of trying to find opportunities to get as much play in as possible. Australia lead the five-match test series 2-1 and will look to win their first Ashes series in England series since 2001
