FIFA suspend Spanish football president Luis Rubiales over ‘Hermoso kiss’

FIFA suspend Spanish football president (RFEF) Luis Rubiales following his incident with Jennifer Hermoso. Rubiales has been handed a ban for 90 days after disciplinary proceedings were started.

There have been a lot of talks after he grabbed Jenni Hermoso’s head and kissed her on the lips after Spain’s victory against England at the Women’s World Cup.

The row has overshadowed Spain’s historic victory in Sydney, Australia, and dominated headlines throughout the week.

Moreover, FIFA have also stated that the ban starts immediately. The chairman of FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Jorge Ivan Palacio of Colombia, took the decision.

Furthermore, Rubiales was expected to announce his resignation on Friday but instead said he would not step down. Instead, the RFEF threatened legal action to defend him after Hermoso said she did not consent to the kiss he gave her.

FIFA’s statement over Luis Rubiales’ suspension

“The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Jorge Ivan Palacio (Colombia), in use of the powers granted by article 51 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), has decided today to provisionally suspend Mr. Luis Rubiales from all football-related activities at national and international level.

“This suspension, which will be effective as of today, is for an initial period of 90 days, pending the disciplinary proceedings opened against Mr. Luis Rubiales on Thursday, August 24.”

FIFA suspend Luis Rubiales for 90 days

FIFA’s announcement comes just days after Rubiales decided not to step down as the president. Furthermore, he claimed that he was being framed by the World Cup winner.

The Spanish national team that won the World Cup, as well as several other players, have said that they would not play international matches while Rubiales remains the president.

The committee said it would not provide further information on the disciplinary proceedings until a final decision was taken.
