EURO 2028: UK and Ireland to host European Championship, 2032 hosts also confirmed

The United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland will co-host the EURO 2028 after Turkey withdrew last week to focus on its joint bid with Italy for Euro 2032, UEFA announced on Tuesday.

10 venues across the five countries – England, the Republic of Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland – have been finalised to host the competition.

Out of those 10 venues, six are in England – Wembley, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Etihad, St James’ Park, Villa Park and Everton’s proposed new stadium, Bramley-Moore Dock.

Turkey pulled out of the running last week, to focus on a joint bid with Italy for Euro 2032 which has also been confirmed by UEFA.

England also hosted the women’s Euro last year, they last hosted a major men’s tournament in 1996 when only 16 teams were involved.

However, they did host the 2020 EURO final, which was delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and held in across Europe at Wembly Stadium.

England and Scotland hosted 12 matches in that tournament, and Italy also hosted some matches in Rome. But they haven’t hosted a single tournament on its own since the 1990 World Cup.

Whereas for Turkey, they hosted the Champions League final in Istanbul in June, but they have never been awarded a major international tournament.
