Erling Haaland wins Men’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year award

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has won the Men’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, with Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka named young player of the year.

The Norwegian was unstoppable in his debut season for City, scoring 52 goals in all competitions and helping Pep’s side to win the Treble. Furthermore, he also beat his team-mates Kevin de Bruyne and John Stones, Arsenal’s Saka and Martin Odegaard, and Harry Kane.

After winning the award, the 23-year-old said: “It’s an honour to win this prestigious award. To be recognised by your competitors is a great feeling and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me.

“It was an unforgettable season for the team and for me personally. Winning the Treble was something I never imagined, so to achieve that with such a special group of players was an amazing feeling.

“We created some incredible memories last season, but now we want to do the same again this year. We have started the season well and we need to keep going.”

Erling Haaland and Manchester City dominate PFA player awards

Haaland bagged 36 goals in his first ever Premier League season, breaking Andy Cole and Alan Shearer’s long-standing record for netting 34 times in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 campaigns. Moreover, there were 42 matches rather than 38 at that time.

He was also the top scorer in the Champions League with 12 goals to his name as it helped Man City to win their first-ever Champions League trophy. Furthermore, they became only the second side in English football to win the Treble.

Meanwhile, Arsenal and Manchester City dominated in the PFA team of the year. The Premier League champions had five players, whereas the Gunners had four.

PFA team of the year: Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal), William Saliba (Arsenal), Ruben Dias (Man City), John Stones (Man City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Rodri (Man City), Martin Odegaard (Arsenal), Kevin de Bruyne (Man City), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Harry Kane (Tottenham), Erling Haaland (Man City).
