With this goal, he has become the quickest player to hit the record, as well as the youngest, doing so aged 23 years and 130 days.

Haaland has also broken Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record, who scored 40 Champions League goals in 45 appearances.

The 23-year-old also became the youngest player to reach 40 Champions League goals, breaking the previous record set by Kylian Mbappe in November 2022.

Erling Haaland breaks Champions League record as Man City complete comeback win against Leipzig

Manchester City were aiming for a win at the Etihad Stadium to top Group G with one game remaining. However, they did not get a good start against the German side.

Lois Openda stunned Pep Guardiola’s side by scoring two goals in the first half. However, Haaland scored the opening goal for City early on in the second half.

Phil Foden then made it 2-2 in the 70th minute as Leipzig failed to hold onto their lead. City then completed the comeback after Julian Alvarez scored the third goal in the 87th minute.

Guardiola’s side already secured a last-16 spot on matchday 4, but this win has ensured that they remain at top of the Group G.
