Devon Conway’s century puts New Zealand in driver’s seat vs Pakistan

Opener Devon Conway led New Zealand’s early domination over Pakistan on Day 1 of the second Test in Karachi with a knock of 122. Electing to bat first, the visitors started strongly as Conway stitched together partnerships of 134 and 100 with Tom Latham and Kane Williamson respectively in front of a modest crowd at the National Stadium. While Devon Conway’s century seemed to put the visitors in driver’s seat. The Pakistani bowlers ensured to end the day with six Kiwi wickets with the opposition having scored over 300.

Conway, who scored a total of 110 runs in the first Test, hit 16 boundaries and one six in his 191-ball knock to notch his fourth century in Test cricket. “It’s been a good ride so far, I’ve only played a handful of Test games so it’s nice to get the opportunity to play and contribute for the team,” Conway, whose century took him past 1,000 Test runs, told reporters.

“It was nice batting out there with Tommy Latham and Kane, we managed to form some good partnerships.”

Moreover, Latham played a good supporting hand, scoring 71 runs off 100 and laid a solid foundation for New Zealand by adding 134 runs along with Conway for the opening stand. Conway, on the other hand, seemed to be going from strength-to-strength after scoring his century before being caught behind by Sarfaraz Ahmed off Agha Salman for 122 off 191.

Having played only 12* Test matches, this 31-year-old Kiwi batter has made a mark on the longest format of the game. Scoring a fine double-ton in the doubt match that too against England, at Lord’s, Conway never looked back.

With a total of 1150 runs, at an impeccable average of 57.50, Conway certainly rules test cricket.

Apart from that, Devon Conway’s 82* in the first Test against Pakistan had helped him gain the highest feat, as he became the fastest Kiwi batter(11) to score 1000 Test runs. Moreover, starting his Test career at the age of 29, Conway has scored four tons, and 5 half centuries.
