David Warner keeps the Reporters Guessing about his retirement plans

Warner said that he has ‘No Plans’ of retiring before the three-match test series against Pakistan

There have been a lot of speculations about David Warner’s retirement since the left-hander announced that he would retire after the Sydney test in January 2024. The fact that he hasn’t got big runs in the ongoing ashes has things a little difficult for the left-hander as now the talks about his retirement have speeded up.

His problems outside the off stump against Stuart Broad have been the same as were in 2019 when he got out to the bowler in almost every innings. Michael Vaughan the former Ashes-winning said that Warner and Smith would retire from the longer format after the Ashes series ends at the Oval.

The Reaction

Reacting to Vaughan’s comments the 36-year-old left-handed opener reacted by laughing it off and said that he has no plans of retiring before the three-match home series against Pakistan which ends in January 2024. In the words of Warner, “I’ve been on the golf course.

No, I don’t have an announcement,” Warner told reporters after a long session batting in the nets on Tuesday in South London. He further said “Johnny Farnham had one last tour and kept going so, who knows, I might have to keep you guessing,” before clarifying: “I won’t be playing any further Test cricket after Pakistan. You have my word.”

The Replacement

On being asked about who should replace him in the test team after his retirement Warner identified Matt Renshaw as one of the candidates for the role that he plays in the team now i.e., of an opener. Interestingly Matt Renshaw had a good start to his test career with a century in the first test against India which Australia won.

Since then, he hasn’t been able to score consistently and had fallen off the radar. But he made a comeback to the Australian squad recently on the back of good performances in the Sheffield Shield and played his last test against India in early 2023.

With both Australian opener Warner and Khawaja aging, there is a high possibility that we could see a new opening pair for Australia in the next couple of years in Marcus Harris and Matt Renshaw. Marcus Harris was the one who replaced Renshaw when he was dropped from the team and there might be a time when both could open for Australia in the future.
