Daniele De Rossi: AS Roma appoints former legend as manager, shortly after firing managerial metronome Jose Mourinho
Serie A club AS Roma is set to get their new coach as their former legend Daniele De Rossi is brought on deck by the club board. Shortly after sacking the legendary Jose Mourinho after the “Special One” failed to maintain a good start of the season, Roma have appointed former defender Daniele De Rossi as their manager.

Daniele De Rossi has been one of the fierce defenders among the ranks of Italian football, as he is considered to be the best in business for the Azzurris. Over the years, De Rossi, whose stark physical stature of well-built and exceptionally strong had been the talk of the town since ages, had swooned over the Italian capital with his finesse. Jose Mourinho, often considered to be one of the greatest managers in the world, has faced the axe at a sudden juncture of the club, as his contract was about to expire at the end of this season.
With Roma on the ninth spot in Serie A and five points off UEFA Champions League qualifying criteria, it was rather a hard decision for the club board to sack one of the greatest managers, who have led the club to their inaugural Europa Conference League trophy, followed by a Europa League final. If Roma could have qualified for the European elite, then Mourinho and the club board might have agreed on a contract extension, but a dismal performance at the Coppa Italia last weekend where they were knocked out by crosstown rivals Lazio and a loss to AC Milan, had prompted club officials to take a strict decision to fire “the Special One”.

De Rossi has been one of the few players of the world who have played for a single club for almost his entire playing career. At his swansong period, he went on to ply his trade for Argentine greats Boca Juniors, but played only five games for them. He has had Stadio Olimpico in his palm during his playing career, and is often considered to be one of the stalwarts of Italian defense. He has signed a deal for the rest of the season, with an option to extend.
According to club’s official owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin, the press release mentioned, “We are happy to be able to hand over the managerial role of AS Roma to Daniele De Rossi, as we feel that the leadership and ambition that have always defined him can prove decisive in achieving the team’s objectives until the end of the season. We were aware of Daniele’s unbreakable bond with the club, but his enthusiasm for accepting the position for the next few months convinced us even more of his ability to be a guide for the players and a proud representative of the club’s values. Welcome home, Daniele.”
De Rossi exults on his return
Daniele De Rossi has mentioned about his gratitude towards the club owners when he said, “I would like to thank the Friedkin family for entrusting me with the responsibility of Roma’s head coach role. From my side, I know no other way but dedication, daily sacrifices, and giving everything I have in order to face the challenges that await us from now until the end of the season.”
“The excitement of being able to sit on our bench is indescribable. Everyone knows what Roma means to me. However, the work that awaits us all has already taken precedence. We have no time or choice but to be competitive, fight for our goals, and try to achieve them, which are the only priorities my staff and I have set for ourselves.”
With a legend on the touchline, Roma players would be hyped up to showcase their true colors in each game, as a Champions League qualification is urgently needed, thus etching his name among the history books by traversing the player-coach line, following the footsteps of Xavi, Carlo Ancelotti and Zidane, among others.
