Cummins ‘Confident’ about Winning the Ashes

The Australian captain feels that his team has the best opportunity of winning the Ashes in England for the first time since 2001

The Australian team has been on a golden run in the last couple of months after winning the World Test Championship and The Ashes series that followed. But the Australian captain feels that he still has a lot to learn as a captain.

He admitted that there is still a lot of room for improvement as there were times in the fourth test at Old Trafford that might have cost Australia the game but the team got lucky as rain saved them on the last day of the match.

Learning From Mistakes

Cummins accepted that the team environment was not as calm as Australia would have liked it to be when England was hitting the ball to all parts of the ground. In the words of Cummins “Something we speak a lot of as a group, is a calm environment. It’s off the field but on the field as well. Probably wasn’t our best day in terms of that. And that’s my fault.

It’s no one else’s. It’s tough. You’re out there, the wicket’s a flat wicket, the batters are batting well, it’s played at a different pace to pretty much any Test cricket before. You’ve seen similar on the flip side as well with them, having nine fielders out, the whole dynamics is different. It’s good. I love the problem-solving aspect of it. Learnt a lot of lessons from the last game”.

Belief in the Bowling Group

On being asked if the team might change the plan to counter England’s attacking batting approach? Cummins said that he doesn’t feel that England’s attacking approach has impacted the team’s bowling plan that much even after they scored 592 runs in less than 108 overs. According to Cummins “I don’t think it’s shifted too much over the series, to be honest,” he said.

“Think Edgbaston, again that was another moment there wasn’t a lot in it for the bowlers. They scored 400 on day one and I don’t see it as too dissimilar to last week. Think you’ve got to hold your never a little bit sometimes, you’ve got to trust that’s your best percentage to get nicks even if they hit a few cover drives”.

England on the other hand should be feeling hard done by the rain as they had a very bright chance of leveling the series at Old Trafford but rain had other plans and now, they can only draw the series to selvage some pride like they did in 2019.
