Chetan Sharma likely to retain his position as Chief selector of Indian team

Chetan Sharma is the front contender to be re-elected as the chairman of selectors for the Indian Men’s team. Sharma was fired along with the entire selection panel after India’s humiliating defeat in the ICC T20 world Cup 2022.

However, the BCCI executives have asked Chetan Sharma to re-apply for the selection panel when it called a total of 12 applicants. According to reports, the former Chairman is likely to be re-elected as the Chairman for having the most test appearances among the shortlisted candidates.

Sharma, had previously presided over the BCCI selection committee from December 2020 until last month. He had led the committee that selected the Indian team for the ICC Men’s T-20 World Cup in 2021 and 2022.

The other candidates likely to be selected for the panel are former Test opener Shiv Sundar Das (East Zone) and veteran Tamil Nadu domestic batsman Sridharan Sharath (South Zone).  

Former India bowler Salil Ankola and opener Connor Williams were invited for interviews along with Amay Khurasia, Ajay Ratra, Venkatesh prasad. The Cricket Advisory Committee will give its final verdict to the board shortly.

Criteria for being a selector

Candidates “shall have played a minimum of 7 Test matches or 30 First Class matches or 10 ODI and 20 First Class matches,” according to the BCCI’s criteria for the position. The candidates “should have left the game at least five years ago,” according to the statement. It has been learned that the BCCI will only provide a contract this time around for a year in order to prevent any misunderstandings.
