Bruno Fernandes set to replace Harry Maguire as new Man United captain

Manchester United are set to announce Bruno Fernandes as their new captain. Erik ten Hag has decided to make him the new captain.

According to Portuguese outlet Abola, the decision has been made already, and will be communicated to the players shortly. Moreover, Harry Maguire confirmed that he is no longer in the leadership role following a discussion with the head coach, who explained his reasons.

Maguire expressed disappointment over the decision, but added that he will fully support the next club captain of the Red Devils. The Portuguese midfielder will now take the armband from Maguire for the 2023/24 season.

Moreover, Bruno has been the most consistent player for Man United since he joined them in 2020. His dedication, leadership qualities, and work rate on the field have made him a driving force within the team.

Last season Fernandes wore the captain’s armband on a regular basis as Maguire was largely on the bench after becoming out-of-favour under Ten Hag.

Bruno Fernandes rejects three Saudi approaches to stay at United

According to Fabrizio Romano, Fernandes had three offers from the Gulf state this summer, but the midfielder did not turn his back on Man United. Offers that the Saudi clubs made are still unnamed, but it would take serious cash to lure a player of his stature.

Rather than joining a Saudi, Fernandes will stay at United to continue being part of a winning project under Ten Hag.

After a 7-0 loss against Liverpool back in March, fans and pundits slammed him for throwing hissy fits and whinging at his team-mates during the game. However, he earned his stripes back thanks to a series of impressive performance over the following weeks. The Red Devils consolidated their place in the top four and reached the latter stages of both the Europa League and the FA Cup.

Fernandes has returned to United for pre-season training after an extended break. United continue their pre-season schedule with a friendly against Lyon on Wednesday in Edinburgh before they jet off on tour to the USA.
