Brendan Rodgers returns as Celtic manager to replace Ange Postecoglou

Brendan Rodgers returns as Celtic manager on a three-year deal to replace Ange Postecoglou. Rodgers will return to Celtic after four years.

The 50-year-old was Celtic’s manager for two-and-a-half years but left for Leicester City in 2019. However, he was sacked by Leicester earlier this year after poor performances.

The former Leicester manager won seven domestic trophies with Celtic in his first stint, including an unbeaten season and consecutive trebles.

“Celtic Football Club is delighted to announce that Brendan Rodgers has been appointed the club’s new Football Manager on a three-year contract,” Celtic published in a statement.

Rodgers had a successful spell with the Foxes, leading them to two fifth-place finishes in the Premier League and won the FA Cup in 2021. However, after he was sacked, Leicester were relegated on the final matchday of the season.

He will replace Ange Postecoglou, who has joined Tottenham after winning a treble with Celtic last year. Rodgers won the same treble in the first two seasons as Celtic’s manager in 2016/17 and 2017/18. In his third season he only won the League Cup.

Celtic played brilliant football under Brendan Rodgers, but Ange took the foundations to the next level. Rodgers had a patient and possession-based style.

However, under Ange it was more of an attacking football as he used his full-backs to join the midfield when in possession.

Celtic’s Champions League dilemma

Even after good attacking football, Postecoglou was unable to change Celtic’s recent Champions League form. The Scottish Champions exited without making much of an impact.

In Rodgers’ first season, Celtic finished bottom of their Champions League group stage. In his second season, they were dropped into the Europa League.

Ange Postecoglou’s team also fell short to get past the round of 32 in the Europa League. Moreover, they finished last in their group in the Champions League.
