Boxing Day Test: Spidercam Operator stood down for the rest of the Test after hitting Nortje
Melbourne Cricket Ground: On Day 2 of the ongoing Test match between Australia and South Africa a fast moving Spidercam hits South Africa’s Anrich Nortje. Resulting, the Spidercam operator who was handling the device on the time of incident has been stood down from the remainder of the Boxing Day Test.
Moreover, Fox Cricket issued an apology to Nortje and the South African team after the incident and the Spidercam was back in action on Day 3 with a minimum height of four meters from the ground.
It took another 25 overs for captain Dean Elgar to bring Nortje back into the attack – in the final session of the day. The South Africa pacer finished Day 2 with figures of 1/50 getting the wicket of Steve Smith, dismissing the former Australia captain for 85. But overall, it was Australia’s day as they reached a commanding 386/6, with a lead of 197 runs already.
Post the Incident, South Africa’s Nortje stated:
Sharing the incident, Nortje told the media, “I saw cables and then I moved my head and then I saw the camera and I was a little bit too late. It was quite quick.”
“I didn’t know what really hit me, to be honest. It didn’t really change my mindset or anything. I tried to stay focused. The one thing we’ve spoken about earlier is how low it is, and it probably shouldn’t be … unless for interviews or something. I don’t think it should be travelling at head height,” he said.
