Australia vs South Africa 2nd Test: David Warner has joined the greats by reviving his flagging Test career with a century in his 100th Test match as Australia continue to dominate day two of the second Test in Melbourne.
Australia went to tea at 2-231 in reply to South Africa’s 189, a lead of 42, with David Warner unbeaten on 135 and Steve Smith 60. Their partnership is 156.
After reaching his century with a hook to the fine leg fence, Warner celebrated in his own unique style, jumping in the air and thrusting his helmet further skyward, before raising his bat and helmet to acknowledge the dressing room and then turning to his wife Candice and daughters in the Shane Warne stand.
Warner Joins elite list of players to score century in 100th test
It was Warner’s first century in almost three years and 28 Test innings and relieved the pressure over whether he would be chosen for the tour of India in February.
Warner joined Colin Cowdrey, Javed Miandad, Gordon Greenidge, Alec Stewart, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Ricky Ponting (one in each innings), Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla and Joe Root as batsmen to make centuries in their 100th Tests.
It was hot work as the temperature rose to 37 degrees, with Warner lying flat on the ground half an hour before tea receiving treatment for cramp.
He was much more circumspect running between wickets leading up to the break.
Why is David Warner’s century so special?
In making his 25th Test century he joined an illustrious group of names to achieve the unique milestone and became just the second Australian to do it behind Ricky Ponting, who is the only player to score twin hundreds in his 100th Test.
Warner also became only the second player to score a century in both his 100th ODI as well as 100th Test, after Gordon Greenidge, and became the eighth Australian to pass 8000 Test runs during the course of his innings.
