IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma Smashes 9th Test Century; His first as Test Captain

On the second day of the first Test match against Australia in Nagpur, India’s stand-out batter Rohit Sharma finally brought his long-awaited wait for a Test hundred to an end with a ninth century in the longest format of the game. The wait of one-and-a-half years since his last triple-digit score came to a close, much to the delight of the Indian fans.

Rohit’s Scintillating Performance

Just like in the Chennai Test two years ago, India’s captain was the lone warrior in the opening Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Rohit, with his knock of 171 deliveries, surpassed the next best score of 23 from R Ashwin, who played as nightwatchman. Have a look at How Australian players appreciated Rohit on field!

Rohit started off the first day of the Test match on a fluent note and reached his half-century at a strike rate of over 80, ending the day with a score of 56 off 69 balls.

Despite the dismissals at the other end of the pitch, Rohit continued to shine and gradually reduced his aggression, eventually reaching the three-figure mark on his 171st delivery, with a lofted shot over mid-off against Todd Murphy.

Captain and Opening Batter

Rohit has now scored six centuries as captain of the Indian team, three in ODIs and two in T20Is, making him the only ever Indian to achieve this feat.

This was also his 38th century as an opener, putting him in second place after Sachin Tendulkar’s 45, and his six centuries in Test cricket make him the eighth best among Indians.

In conclusion, Rohit Sharma’s ninth Test century in Nagpur was a script for a marvelous piece of history for India, as the Indian captain and opening batter once again proved his worth as one of the best in the business.
