BCCI Retires MS Dhoni’s Iconic No. 7 Jersey as a Tribute to the Cricket Legend

In a heartfelt tribute to former India captain MS Dhoni, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made the decision to officially retire the legendary cricketer’s iconic No. 7 jersey. This move comes three years after Dhoni bid farewell to international cricket, acknowledging his unparalleled contributions to the game.

Following Tendulkar’s Legacy

Sachin Tendulkar’s No. 10 jersey was retired in 2017, and now, the BCCI has extended this rare honor to MS Dhoni’s No. 7 shirt. Both cricket legends, who have left an indelible mark on the sport, now share the distinction of having their jersey numbers retired by the Indian cricket board.

MS Dhoni’s No. 7 jersey became synonymous with success, particularly in ICC events, where he led India to victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. The retirement of his jersey symbolizes the immense impact and leadership he brought to the Indian cricket team during his captaincy.

The BCCI has communicated to current players in the Indian team that they are not allowed to choose the No. 7 jersey, similar to the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar’s No. 10. This decision ensures that Dhoni’s legacy remains intact, and the iconic number is reserved in perpetuity as a mark of respect for his outstanding career.

Limited Numbers for Players

Reports confirm that the No. 7 shirt is now off the shelves for Indian players. The BCCI’s swift action demonstrates the significance they attribute to preserving the legacy of cricketing icons and the symbolic value attached to jersey numbers.

The BCCI official revealed that a total of 60 jersey numbers are currently designated to regular and prospective players in the Indian team. This allocation system ensures that even if a player is out of the team temporarily, their number is not assigned to a new player, providing continuity and respect for each player’s association with their chosen jersey number.
