Barcelona will face Tottenham for the Joan Gamper Trophy on 8 August

Barcelona will face Tottenham Hostpur in the 2023 edition of the Joan Gamper trophy. The match will take place at the Montjuic Olympic stadium on 8 August.

The Joan Gamper Trophy match is the traditional curtain-raiser of a season for Barcelona, usually played at Spotify Camp Nou.

Newly appointed Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou will face Barcelona in the Gamper trophy. The first time both sides were together in the tournament was back in 1986.

Due to ongoing renovations at the Spotify Camp Nou the game will be played in Estadi Lluis Companys in Montjuic. For the next 15-16 months, the Catalan club will play their home matches at the Montjuic, until the new Spotify Camp Nou is ready.

It was reported that Lazio will face Barcelona in the Gamper trophy, but the Italian side pulled-out at the last moment. Now, Tottenham will face the five time Champions League winners.

58th edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy will be played at Montjuic

It will be the 58th edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy. Moreover, when Spurs last faced the LaLiga champions in 1986, it used to be a four-game tournament.

However, Spurs never faced Barcelona, as they were eliminated by PSV Eindhoven in one of the Semi-finals.

Last season Barcelona played Pumas and won the game 6-0 at the Spotify Camp Nou. Spurs are one of the five English sides to play in the Gamper Trophy.

Joan Gamper Trophy Tradition

The competition is hosted by Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou and is named in honour of Joan Gamper, a founding member, player, and later president of the club. The competition was inaugurated in 1966 by Enric Llaudet.

Traditionally the match sees the squad captains and manager say a few words about the upcoming campaign to the fans ahead of the new season on their objectives.

Moreover, this will be the third time that the Joan Gamper Trophy match will be played at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium after 1990 and 1996.

After the Joan Gamper Trophy match, the LaLiga giants will begin their title defence against Getafe away from home. However, there will be no fans present at the stadium due to a ban.
