Atletico Madrid beat Real Madrid 3-1 in the Madrid derby to end their perfect start to the new season. Former Los Blancos striker Alvaro Morata scored a brace and Antoine Griezmann scored one goal to hand Madrid their first defeat of the season.

Tonie Kroos did score the goal for Real Madrid to make it 2-1 for the visitors. However, Griezmann scored the last goal to make sure Atletico took all three points.

A loss for the Los Blancos in the Madrid derby means that Catalan clubs Barcelona and Girona are at the top of La Liga with 16 points each from six matches. Barcelona defeated Celta Vigo 3-2 after scoring three late goals, whereas Girona beat Mallorca 5-3.

So, Madrid now stay one point behind in third place. They won five consecutive league games, and in midweek they defeated Union Berlin in the group stage of the Champions League.

After winning the Madrid derby Atletico now sit in fifth place with 10 points. The Los Rojiblancos were coming into this game after suffering a 3-0 loss to Valencia and a 1-1 draw against Lazio in the Champions League.

“We played a great match,” Simeone said after the match. “The team recovered its spirit and, when that happens, it doesn’t matter the rival.”

All three goals by Atletico on Sunday at Metropolitano stadium came from headers. Morata scored in the fourth and 46th minutes, while Griezmann got on the board in the 18th. Madrid’s goal came in the 35th after Kroos cleared a defender before finding the net from outside the area.

“We didn’t get off to a good start, didn’t defend well,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. “And with 2-0 they took control, defending well and taking advantage of quick transitions. They were better than us in that aspect.”
