Asian Kabaddi Championship 2023 to be hosted by South Korea after six years

The Asian Kabaddi Championship is back and is set to be held in Busan, South Korea from June 27 to 30, 2023. This is the first time in six years that Kabaddi will be played at an international level.

India: Defending Champions

The Indian Kabaddi team will enter Busan as the defending champions. Kabaddi is one of the sports that Indians excel at, with India winning seven gold medals in the last eight editions of the Asian Kabaddi Championship since it began in 1980. Only Iran has managed to break the streak of team India, winning the championship in 2003.

The women’s Kabaddi team is also the defending champion as they defeated South Korea 42-20 in the final in Iran in 2017. The Indian Women’s Kabaddi team has won four gold medals in the last five editions of the Asian Kabaddi Championship, with only the South Korean Women’s Kabaddi team managing to win the title once.

In 2017, former captain Anup Kumar led Team India to glory in the Asian Kabaddi Championship. He is now the coach of the Puneri Paltan Kabaddi team in the Pro Kabaddi League.

Trials and Selections

Three experienced coaches, Ashan Kumar, E. Bhaskaran, and Sanjeev Baliyan, will be taking charge of the Asian Championship team and will select the players for the tournament. The trials for the Indian men’s Kabaddi team that will be going to Busan for the Asian Kabaddi Championship will take place on May 17, at the Patliputra Sports Complex.
