Antoine Griezmann is now Atletico Madrid’s joint all-time top goal scorer after he scored his 173rd goal against Getafe in La Liga.

Antoine Griezmann ties with Luis Aragones as club’s all-time top-scorer

Griezmann has scored his 173rd goal for Atlético Madrid, equaling club legend Luis Aragones as the club’s all-time top scorer. Aragones reached his mark in 370 matches, while Griezmann needed 364 games with the club.

The Frenchman netted twice against Getafe in La Liga on Tuesday night as the club hosted the side from the south of Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Despite scoring twice, Atletico drew 3-3 against Getafe, ending their record-tying 20-game home winning streak.

Nevertheless, with his strike in the 44th minute and a 69th-minute penalty, he now needs one goal to break Luis Aragones’ record.

Despite Griezmann becoming Atletico’s joint all-time scorer, Simeone’s side have now dropped points for the first time at home this season.

“I am absolutely delighted for Griezmann, a player who is part of the club’s history. He has always given everything and is very important for us,” said Diego Simeone.

Getafe hold 10-man Atletico Madrid in a 3-3 draw

Griezmann opened the scoring in the 44th minute, but Getafe scored the equaliser in the 53rd minute of the game. Morata then regained Atletico’s lead in the 63rd minute with a header.

The Los Rojiblancos extended their lead through Griezmann’s penalty in the 69th minute. After hitting his penalty in the top corner, Atletico’s fans chanted Griezmann’s and Aragones’ names at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

However, Getafe were not done yet and pulled one back after Oscar Rodriguez scored their second goal in the 87th minute. Borja Mayoral then netted the equalizer by converting the penalty three minutes into stoppage time.

This draw has now lifted Atletico Madrid to third place in La Liga standings as they have the same 35 points as defending champions Barcelona. They are now 9 points off the top of the table, where Girona sit with 44 points.
